Responses

Okay, I have no idea how to respond to a comment someone else left, so I’ll just post my answers in my main Tumblr thingie. Big plans - I’ve got a postdoc position lined up for the following year (working under a professor I’m already part-timing for, and we like each other). After that, I plan to send out applications and see what happens. A CS degree should be worth a fair amount.

I’ll check out Sundiver - I haven’t been reading a whole lot of fiction lately, but I could probably use the break.

As for my past fandoms, I think that depends how you define “fan”. The biggest one I can think of is the Megaman series - I started with the NES games as a kid and have followed the whole thing with all its branches avidly. It seems to be largely dead now, though, with nothing actually new since about three years ago and everything else getting randomly cancelled. Mythbusters is also something I’m a great fan of, and that’s something I’m glad is still ongoing. There are others, but those are the two that leap to mind.

What do I have to do to start a conversation going?

Last night’s dream

I dreamt I’d been introduced via YouTube or Tumblr or one of these sites to a new TV show, some kind of urban-fantasy-with-superheroes thing, where the main character was a young woman blessed/cursed with powers that manifested outwardly as having three legs. She was otherwise human, and the stories mostly revolved around her living her life the way she herself wanted to, regardless of what her family, the superhero authorities, or the ancient spirits that granted her her powers wanted. I don’t remember any of the other details, but what stood out to me was my own reaction to it.

For the first time in years, I felt like I wanted to be a fan of something. Like I was ready to get emotionally invested in a character again, one with a fanbase who’d share my feelings for once. Really, all this dream did for me was highlight how lonely and disconnected I feel when I look around at what’s popular. Sure, there are things I like, but nothing I’m that into. I’m tired of feeling like this, but I’m not sure what I can do about it.

I love to draw, but I don’t have the time or energy to devote to something like this (not for the next two months or so at least, while I finish my Ph.D.) I want something emotionally cathartic, intellectually satisfying, and … well, physically attractive. Why is this so hard to find?
